From 1969 to 2023, a lot has changed in the world. But one thing has remained constant in the Charlotte, NC area: Autobell® Car Wash.

In 1969, the late Charles (Charlie) Howard needed a new career. He had a vision to provide a high-quality car wash experience with the focus on the customer. Do that at a good value, and people would keep coming back. Nearly 54 years later, Autobell® continues to carry out Charlie’s vision.

“My father wasn’t rich, but he was resourceful. The first few Autobell® locations were built literally by our own hands,” said Charles (Chuck) Howard II. “My father passed away in 1986 and left me to run our ten Autobell® locations. I started documenting the Autobell® process once I took over with the goal of significant growth. We now have over 85 locations.”

Charlie’s vision has not only survived, but it’s also thrived. Autobell® now has more than 3,000 highly trained employees and washes nearly five million cars annually. Plus, it’s America’s largest family-owned car wash company.

“I think there are a lot of advantages to being a family business,” Chuck said. “We continue to grow because we are resourceful, can make quick decisions, not worry about stock prices, and pivot as needed.”

One piece of Charlie’s vision was being community conscience. Autobell® is committed to environmental protection and conservation, treating 100% and recycling up to 100% of our wash water through technologically advanced equipment. We continuously strive to engage with the local communities and participate in charity programs, as well as provide opportunities and scholarships for our employees.

“Many of our employees come to work with us as teenagers and continue through their college lives,” said Chuck. “Those who transition into executive roles at Autobell® really become part of the family.”
